Virginia does not require the licensing of Home Inspectors in the state. It maintains a certification program for Home Inspectors through the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation. Although certification is voluntary, any inspector who wishes to identify themselves as a "Certified Home Inspector" must complete the state program and requirements.

Legislation Overview

In July 2003, the Commonwealth of Virginia joined other states in enacting legislation affecting home inspections. This new law provides for the voluntary state certification of inspectors who perform "Certified Home Inspections." The law defines a Certified Home Inspection and establishes minimum eligibility requirements for a Certified Home Inspector.

Minimum standards for a Certified Home Inspection mirror closely the Standard of Practice and Code of Ethics of the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI).
